Chinamans Beach
Shoalhaven City Council, New South Wales
About
A sheltered jewel in Jervis Bay's crown, Chinamans Beach curves along the coastline with the same striking white sand that makes this region famous. The beach's protected position makes it a haven for families, with typically gentler conditions than its neighboring beaches.
The gradual slope into the crystal-clear waters creates an ideal environment for young swimmers, while the rocky headlands at each end offer excellent snorkeling opportunities where you might spot colorful fish darting among the rocks. During calmer conditions, the water clarity rivals a swimming pool, making it perfect for swimming and paddling.
Access is easy via the walking track from the designated car park off Elizabeth Drive. The short walk through coastal bushland opens up to reveal breathtaking views across the bay's turquoise waters. Keep an eye out for the local birdlife that often visits the surrounding trees and shrubs.
Unlike the more renowned Hyams Beach just around the corner, Chinamans tends to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful beach experience. The beach's north-facing aspect provides good protection from southerly winds, making it a reliable choice when other beaches are too exposed to the elements.
During low tide, adventurous beachgoers can walk around the rocky point to Hyams Beach, though always check tide times as this route becomes impassable when the water rises.
