About

Big Sandhills stands as the most impressive of Moreton Island's three named dune systems, towering over the surrounding landscape like a desert mountain transplanted to the coast. Located in the northern section of the dune system, it rises dramatically from the coastal vegetation, creating an otherworldly landscape where golden sand meets ocean views.

The dune's impressive height and steep faces make it a premier destination for sandboarding, offering some of the most thrilling rides on the island. From its summit, visitors are treated to panoramic views spanning across Moreton Island, the Pacific Ocean, and on clear days, the distant Glass House Mountains on the mainland.

Like its smaller southern siblings, Big Sandhills has no facilities, so visitors need to bring all necessary supplies, including plenty of water and sun protection. The climb to the top is challenging but rewarding, with the soft sand making each step a workout. The dune's size and exposure mean it can become quite hot during midday, with the sand temperature rising significantly.

The pristine nature of the dune system must be preserved, so visitors should follow the "leave no trace" principle and avoid disturbing any vegetation around the dune's edges.
