Neigwl Beach
Gwynedd, Wales
About
Neigwl Beach, also known as Hell's Mouth (Porth Neigwl), is one of the most dramatic beaches on the Llŷn Peninsula. This vast, sweeping bay stretches for an impressive three miles, creating a spectacular crescent of sand and pebbles backed by steep cliffs.
The beach gets its evocative nickname from its notorious reputation among sailors – the bay's shape and prevailing winds can create challenging conditions, which historically proved treacherous for shipping. Today, these same conditions make it a magnet for surfers, who come to ride the powerful waves that roll in from the Irish Sea. It's considered one of Wales' most reliable surfing spots, particularly popular during winter swells.
Unlike many of the peninsula's smaller coves, Hell's Mouth offers a sense of raw, untamed wilderness. The beach feels impressively remote despite being relatively accessible, with parking available at both ends. The sheer scale of the bay means that even on busier days, it's easy to find your own space among the dunes and shoreline.
Bird watchers will appreciate the variety of seabirds that frequent the cliffs and shoreline, while walkers can enjoy the spectacular views from the Wales Coast Path that runs along the clifftops. However, visitors should note that swimming isn't recommended due to strong currents and there are no lifeguard services.
The beach's western end near Llanengan offers the best access and parking facilities, though there are no shops or cafes – this is a place that maintains its wild, natural character, perfect for those seeking to experience the raw power and beauty of the Welsh coast.
